There’s nothing better than loading up the MINI and heading out for a fun drive on the weekend. We recently took a MINI Countryman on a surf trip to Nobbies Beach in Newcastle, it turned out we had just as much fun driving as out on the waves. We’ve put together a list of great summer drives all around Australia with roads perfectly suited to the go-kart handling of your MINI. Share your #MINISummerDrive on Instagram and share your own trips!
The Great Ocean Road is a no brainer. It’s called the ‘Great’ Ocean Road for a very good reason, this beautiful road winds its way along the stunning coastline and is dotted with vibrant towns, world class surf breaks, great coffee and curious boutique shops. The famous road actually runs from Anglesea and stops just outside Warnambool, but you can drive as much or as little as you want.
Those starting out from Sydney would do best to aim for the hills. More specifically The Blue Mountains’ stretch between Mittagong and Richlands. This remote mountain drive crosses through the incredible Wombeyan Caves where it’s well worth a stop, but it’s the drive where you’ll have the most fun. You’ll love the tight switchbacks, sweeping bends and stunning scenery.
Make tracks for the D’Aguilar Range, about 45 minutes outside the city. There you’ll find Mount Pleasant and Mount Glorious which as their names suggests are great places to spend a sunny day. Then give your MINI a real handling test on the corners of Mount Nebo.
If you want a drive out of Perth that will test the go-kart handling of your MINI it’s hard to go past the Zig Zag Scenic Drive. Not too far outside the capital is this legendary 3km stretch of hairpin laden bitumen. When you’ve driven enough laps there are more than enough wineries and cafes within driving distance.
The Adelaide Hills is where you’ll find great corners, beautiful bush and even better food and wine. It’s known as the land of the long lunch, but it also happens to be the land of the long sweeping corner. A small chance of rain means your MINI convertible will be in its element here.
Tasmania is renown for its drives and Hobart has its fair share. Head out of the city and straight for the beautiful Wineglass Bay. The journey will take you up the scenic East Coast through winding roads and lush forests to the iconic beach. Along the way you’ll find some awesome surf spots, so it’s well worth throwing your board on the roof.
If you can get off a round-about Canberra is blessed with a multitude of hills, perfect for some seriously fun driving. If you’re after a real adrenaline rush head for Corin Forest where you can have a go on a mountainside luge, the closest thing to driving a MINI.
